Verkroost Charity Plate raises over £600 for Emmaus - a charity supporting the homeless
The Verkroost Plate Charity Tournament was held on Sunday 25th June. An excellent turnout with 24 entrants saw a friendly but hard fought competition.  We were very  pleased to be joined by a team from Acle tennis club including their chairman.

The format  was a Mexican Tournament for adults and juniors.  All four courts were used intensively for timed 15 minute matches. Each player accumulated their individual wins.  After an excellent lunch the final was held between the four players with the highest total of individual wins. With a fine display of tennis, Hans Verkroost emerged the winner with 29 winning games. He was followed by Judith Phillip in second place, Gail Wells in third place and Pam Chambers in fourth place.

The chosen charity for this years Verkroost Plate was Emmaus, a charity supporting the homeless. More  than  £600 was raised for the Ipswich branch of Emmaus. A fantastic result. We were delighted  that Terry Waite CBE the president of Emmaus U.K. was able to join us for the day. During lunch he gave a very  moving account of the work of Emmaus. He explained how Emmaus helps people back in to work and normal life.
He later presented the prizes to the winner and runners up.

On a personal note, I am very grateful to Netty and Hans Verkroost for sponsoring the competition, for choosing Emmaus as their charity and for raising such a magnificent sum for our local branch of Emmaus. A huge thank you to them, to Julia, Isobel and to all who made it such a happy and successful day. Thank you to everyone who came, to the players, to the raffle ticket buyers, to the raffle prize givers, to the cake makers, to the tent putter-uppers, to the washer-uppers, to the caterers and to Terry Waite.

I have been involved with Emmaus Ipswich for several years. Emmaus opened their shop  in Ipswich last year (The Dales, 216 Dales Road, Ipswich IP1 4JY). Please visit if you're in Ipswich, there is a great range of furniture (some beautifully upcycled), clothes and other goods at good prices.

If you would like to donate any good quality items for the shop I would be happy to take them to the shop for you as long as they fit in the back of my Skoda! I can be contacted on 07748 655597.

Many thanks for a great day of fun tennis.
