This is how the LTA describes Cardio tennis:
What is Cardio Tennis?
Cardio Tennis is a series of tennis-based drills and activities played to up-tempo music on a tennis court. It does not require tennis skills, but is all about keeping your heart rate up, burning calories and having fun. Whether the ball goes in or out is irrelevant as the main purpose is to get fit. Cardio Tennis includes a warm-up, cardio workout, and cool down phases. If you are looking for a great new way to get in shape and to burn calories, why not try Cardio Tennis? There are drills for absolute beginners through to advanced players, all of which provide you with a great cardio workout while improving skill. Cardio Tennis is more fun than working out in a gym or other forms of exercise.
The session takes place on a tennis court and is run by a qualified tennis coach. The main purpose of the session is to provide you with an enjoyable work out. It's not about forehands and backhands, it's about getting in to your appropriate cardio zone and getting a great workout. Music is played during the session to help create a high energy atmosphere and add motivation. Participants are advised to wear heart rate monitors so they can see if they are working hard enough (or too hard). The heart rate monitors also provide an accurate summary of the session including how many calories have been burned.
Tennis Xpress is a great way to learn to play tennis. In 6 one and half hour sessions you will learn to hit forehands, backhands, volleys, serves and learn how to score. You play with low compression balls which help you learn more quickly. The sessions we have run so far have been really popular and participants say they have both learned a lot and laughed a lot. If you want to learn to play and have some fun, come along to the next course. Courses cost £35 for members and £45 for non - members. Non-members who join the club on completion of their Tennis Xpress course receive a £10 discount on the membership fee.
An alternative to mainstream tennis! Played over mini nets with low compression balls Touch Tennis has become an internationally recognised sport. You can now take part at Wortham! The Touch Tennis website states 'the key to touchtennis lies not in manipulating the ball with raw power but rather with deft stroke-play and chess-like manoeuvres. Played on a reduced size court with foam balls and 21 inch kids racquets, its carefully calibrated regulations aim to level the playing field for competitors by fostering long, intense rallies and clever angle play. It doesn’t matter whether you’re young or old, male or female; the key to the game’s addictiveness is the enjoyment that comes from repeatedly and intelligently outwitting opponents. Believe us when we say that once you’ve experienced the joy that comes with pulling off a forehand winner after an energetic 60 stroke rally you’ll be dying to repeat the feat over and over! Seen Federer hit a shot and want to copy it? You'll be able to. Like that backhand by Becker? No problem.'
